Visit the Moda Bake Shop to see my tutorial on adding borders to a quilt
Moda Bake Shop is doing a Basics month this month. Today I share how to add borders to your quilt. Get your quilts to lay flat by adding borders the correct way!
Hi~ wanted to stop by and thank you for your post on the Bake Shop! As a longarmer, I appreciate anyone's help on furthering the advancement of educating folks on avoiding those awful wavy borders!! (YUCK!) Curious minds want to know: when piecing borders, do you advocate straight seams or diagonal seams? I used to be one of those that went the diagonal seam route, but started realizing that those bias seams might be adding to my wavy woes. Do you find this to be the case?
thanks so much for your post on the moda bakeshop - I'm very curious as to why putting borders on this way rather than "just slap a long length of fabric on the sides, cut off any excess and think you are good to go the strip on" makes all the difference ?
That was a great tutorial! I wished I had seen this when I first learned to quilt. I had terrible problems with wavy borders. Now I always cut my border 1/4 inch shorter than my measurement. I think it helps keep the edges even flatter. Not sure why, but I think it's because as I am manipulating the border fabric to pin in place, it gets a slight bit elongated since it is cut lengthwise from the bolt so it stretches a little. That's just my two cents though;)
